New ODI recruit Jos Buttler is hoping he can be the catalyst for a change in England's fortunes on their troubled tour of the United Arab Emirates.
After retaining his place in the Twenty20 side, the Somerset batsman earned his first call-up to the one-day squad this week and now hopes he can push his way into the starting XI to help England avenge their three-nil Test series whitewash at the hands of Pakistan.
The four-ODI series begins on 13 February in Abu Dhabi and precedes three Twenty20 internationals.
"I'm really pleased with the selection for the two squads and I'm very excited about the challenges that lie ahead," the 21-year-old said.
"If I get a chance to play, it will be a very proud moment for me. It will be a very tough tour, with Pakistan being on a high from (winning) the Test series, but it presents a great opportunity and challenge, and one I that I hope I can contribute to."
Buttler has already played four Twenty20 internationals and was recently part of the England Lions squad for their tours to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and now hopes he can take his good form into the international arena.
"My time with the Lions in Sri Lanka went really well. The wickets were very good and I was pleased with my form. Hopefully I can carry on with that run of good form," he added.
Along with Somerset team-mate Craig Kieswetter, Buttler has received high praise from his county captain and former England opener, Marcus Trescothick, who believes the duo have a long future in international cricket.
Trescothick said: "It's great news for Jos and Craig. I've been lucky enough to have been involved with both of their careers right from the start. It's always good to see the next generation of Somerset players coming through, and then to see them go on to become England players.
"They have both put in a great deal of hard work and they have got their rewards."
