Australia have called up the uncapped Jon Holland to their squad for the ongoing tri-series with Sri Lanka and India as cover for Xavier Doherty, who on Thursday pulled up lame with back spasms.

Holland will join the team in Sydney on Friday, with fellow left-arm spinner Doherty set for medical assessment before a decision is made on whether or not he will play against Sri Lanka.

"While Xavier's injury is not deemed as being serious it is important we have capable cover in Sydney for Friday's match. Jon has been bowling well for Victoria across all formats in recent weeks and we feel should he be required he will perform with distinction," said coach Mickey Arthur.

"For purposes of clarity, other spinners who are playing in Western Australia, either for Western Australia or New South Wales were not considered, nor was Nathan Lyon, who is recovering from a quad strain."

The 24-year-old Holland was part of the ODI squad that toured India in 2009, but did not play a game.
